RDS Unconventional
Radial Drilling Services delivers proven technology for unconventional hydrocarbon resources — where enhanced recovery techniques unlock reserves that conventional methods cannot reach.
Unconventional Resources
Unconventional resources are hydrocarbon reservoirs that have low permeability and porosity and so are difficult to produce. Often enhanced recovery techniques, such as radial jetting, fracture stimulation or steam injection, must be performed — making the production process more difficult than a conventional play.
Worldwide Hydrocarbon Resources (BBOE)
Only a third of worldwide oil and gas reserves are considered conventional — the remainder being in unconventional resources.
Examples of Unconventional Resources
Tight Gas
Low-permeability sandstone or carbonate reservoirs requiring stimulation to achieve economic production rates.
Coalbed Methane (CBM)
Natural gas adsorbed within coal seams, requiring dewatering and pressure reduction to release the gas.
Shale Gas
Natural gas trapped within fine-grained shale formations, requiring hydraulic fracturing or radial jetting for production.
Shale Oil
Liquid hydrocarbons trapped in shale formations, unlocked through advanced stimulation techniques including radial drilling.
Heavy Oil / Tar Sands
Viscous crude oil requiring thermal methods such as steam injection (HOSS™) to reduce viscosity and enable flow.
Methane Hydrates
Ice-like crystalline structures containing methane, representing a vast future energy resource requiring specialized extraction.
